From changing stagenames five times to dissing Mr Eazi for his derogatory anti-Nigeria and pro-Ghana tweet,15 year old rapper,Tyla Blaq has been making waves everywhere. As he's gearing up for the release of his first official single and a mix-tape,he took a little time to drop by and speak with the boss,Ezewest CEO Ezewestmedia.com. Read on the edited excerpts from the interview.
Where are you from? Let's start from there.
Oh! I'm actually mixed.I was born in the South-west but really my grandfather is from here,Nnewi, and really I love the place..I'm an Igbo boy with yoruba upbringing,[so to say]!
How has it influenced your style?
Yeah..I have yoruba lyrics, very very indigenous ones.I mean, how can I have lived in a yoruba state for fifteen years without that? And I can't even speak Igbo(laughs) but its in me!
What about the American accent?
Oh! To be candid,I have nothing American, still wondering where I got it from.I don't watch American movies that much except for Fast and Furious..Its just the music thing! I love American music.
You recently called yourself 'Tha Wave King'.What does it has to do with Oga Micky?
I mean, Oga Micky is my manchi..I remember a guy called me to tell me its an insult on Oga Micky's personality since he calls himself Waveboy and here I am,changing it to King. I'm not trying to insult him,he's my boss and he knows it,too!
What are your thoughts on the current state of the rap game and music industry,as a whole?
It seems like everything isn't paying well, yet but we're growing. We need platforms to spring up and solve the 99 problems of the industry. I'm actually working' on building a platform that'll favour artists and fans alike since Jay Z's Tidal has failed. The game is tough and tight tho'.Getting just a feature on a blog was a tug of war,let alone airplay. But..it is well!
How do you define your style and genre?
Yeah..I can go on and say I do so and so music or just say I do every genre[I really do!],but I just have to get something in the mainstream.
That is Hip Hop..my type of Hip Hop is sandwiched with Afrobeats and Pop..Bread-and-butter Hip Hop?
Who and who has influenced your style?
Everyone! Olamide, Falz,YCee, Oga Boss, Everyone and abroad,Desiigner,Drizzy,Tyga,Chance The Rapper[I heard he got 3 Grammys?],to the oldies,Jay Z,Yeezy,Tupac and Biggie. Just everyone doing this..is it allowed?..sh*t!
Who do you listen to now?
Same thing! Everyone..especially up-and-comers.
Who do you want to work with in the future?
Wizkid,first of all,then,Falz,Olamide,Illygatti,and outside,Sark,Jay Z,Desiigner,Tyga and Chance..and Davido.
